Woman Speaking

Just a warm-up sketch from a stock photo. The likeness ain't exactly on, but it's just a style exercise so who cares. Maybe I need to do more of this randomness. It's so much more relaxing than trying to draw well-known celebrities and worrying about screwing them up.

Perez Hilton

So this Perez/Will.I.Am story seems pretty open-and-shut to me. The guy was running his mouth and he got hit, end of story. I figure you'd have to be some kind of world-class narcissist to think you can go around using fighting words, and then paint yourself as the innocent victim of a hate crime when it goes bad. Plus he's got a lot of nerve acting like he got gay-bashed when he was the one throwing f-bombs around in the first place. I think it was him gay-bashing the other guy, if you want to get technical about it.

There's only one thing that confuses me about this story, and it goes like this: Wait, this is what Perez Hilton looks like? How hard did he get hit? I mean I realize that he released this picture of himself and his teeny scar in a bid for sympathy. But when I see him making his pouty face all I can think about is how odd-looking he actually is. I don't understand how somebody who looks like this has made himself the terror of the swell set. You mean some of the most beautiful people in the world are sitting around in fear of this guy's pronouncements? He's in no position to insult anyone. He looks like something the Joker would use to scare his kids into eating their vegetables.

beanbots #6

The other night there was a reunion of old Marvel co-workers, and at some point I was telling someone--I think it was Mark McKenna--that I was doing a webcomic. I spent a minute trying to explain the idea of slice-of-life non-sequiter parental humor, and he just said, "Oh, so you're trying to do The Bakers." Which totally deflated me beause it was correct. Somehow I had completely forgotten that I lifted the whole idea from Kyle Baker to begin with. Only a few episodes in and I'm apparently already working on my revisionist version of the strip's history. By this time next year I'll be telling people, "...so then I had the idea to put words alongside of illustrations to indicate speech, and to utilize a sequential series of boxes to represent the passage of time."

beanbots #5

Yikes. I have to get the regular blog happening again before this turns into nothing but a bunch of links to another website. It sure is hard to get started again once I've lost my momentum.

beanbots #3

As of now this strip has migrated over to the webcomix site Act-I-vate, and a new one will publish every Friday.

Big thanks to Leland Purvis for pulling me into the orbit of AIV and Deep Six Studio, and to Dean Haspiel for extending the invitation and encouraging me to make this an ongoing feature. And to Jennifer Hayden for the nice comments.

Producing the art is a challenge, but one thing I'm not worried about is having enough material, because my kids have given me about six months' worth of scripts already.

:( :( :( :( :(

I never wanted to have to do one of these "sorry for no posts" posts. But a shirtless Ryan Reynolds has stood as my enduring statement to the world for two weeks, and by God I won't have that continue.

If you're following this blog at all, it has been on unintentional standby for a little while while I've been dealing with work.

As Homer Simpson once said: "Stupid economic recovery!"

More posts coming soon, including links to my comic strip's new home. Cheers!

Ryan Reynolds

This is just a practice drawing. I don't have anything to say about Ryan Reynolds. Although according to a lot of websites I apparently am supposed to be a fan of his. Because he is currently featured in some horrible movie that's based on some kind of illustrated periodical fiction which I used to shell out money for when I was a stupid kid. Apparently I have no choice in the matter, I dearly love all this dogshit.

Oh, I'm told I'll also want to see him when they spin his character off into another horrible movie a few years from now, despite the fact that his character in the movie has nothing to do with the awful character from the periodicals that it's allegedly based on. So now I'm all up to date on that.
