A silly idea inspired by a delightfully savage review of the "Footloose" remake on Pajiba.com. It occurred to me that this blistering sentence could be excerpted out of context to make the most misleading pull-quote in history. Once I thought of it, I couldn't resist the idea of making a fake poster out of it.

A pinup I did awhile back for Bill Presing and Matt Peters' "Rex Steele: Nazi Smasher" graphic novel. I was thrilled to do it, as I admire their work and I'm hugely indebted to both those guys: they basically taught me animation character construction on the fly, when they were at Jumbo Pictures and someone who wasn't paying attention hired me to work on the "Disney's Doug" childrens' books. Thanks to them I went on to fuck up the character designs of many, many animated cartoon shows. Matt and Bill absolutely rule.
"Rex" is one of those strips that manages to be hilariously over-the-top while being played completely straight, and I tried to come up with a funny twist on the premise. The gag is that Rex's evil Nazi nemesis has secretly taken a Bettie Page-style stag reel of Rex's pure-hearted sidekick in the vile clutches of the femme fatale, and Rex is all too happy to kick back and watch it over beers. It probably makes no sense in the explanation, but the guys seemed to get a kick out of it.
Rex was eventually turned into an awesome short animated film by director Alex Woo:

The results of an evening misspent sketching the bar crowds on 2nd Ave near the U.N. Lots of businessmen, lots of diplomat types, lots of women in heels they could barely walk in. Funniest moment was when a passing guy briefly took an interest in what I was doing, only to realize with some disappointment that my pencil sharpener wasn't drug paraphernalia.

I love doing studies from stock photography. I thought it might be fun in this instance to take some related images and mash them together into a montage to form a more completed illustration. (Photographer: Tim Tadder via Corbis)

Some rejected poster concepts for WrestleMania 27, which took place in Atlanta earlier this year. Fans may notice that The Rock is nowhere to be seen, because these were done when his hosting was still a closely-guarded secret.

I just ran across this photo randomly and had to draw it. It strikes me as an amazing composition, almost like circles within circles. Every fiber of Picasso's body seems to be orbiting around his kid. All the lines in his face and those tendons on his neck are converging on that perfect, circular blob of baby boy. I may have failed to convey any of this in the drawing, because I was having too much fun covering every square inch with tiny lines.
