St. Nick

A Christmas-themed sketch inspired by a facebook post from my onetime Marvel boss, Marcus McLaurin. He had some thoughts on the description of St. Nick in "The Night Before Christmas". Specifically, that the description in the poem doesn't remotely resemble the way that they always draw Santa Claus and in fact describes, in Marcus' words, "a dirty tiny elf". I thought that was brilliant.

In case you're wondering, these aren't just practice sketches of some random celebrity I saw in a magazine. I had a good reason for drawing this person given that I'm so well informed about her. Like for instance, I learned from looking at the caption of this photograph that she's one of the stars of Gossip Girl, which I'm certain is definitely a show on, uh... TV, I guess. It must be TV. Is it TV? They still make TV shows, right?

Well, I'm glad we settled that. All this research is exhausting.

Jennifer Hudson

I had a storyboard job in which the client was very keen that I capture Jennifer Hudson accurately. After a lot of trial and error--emphasis on error--I just put the boards aside and started doing free-form studies of her, in the hope that some kind of breakthrough would occur. Long story short, I pretty much wanted to throw myself in front of a bus after completing each one of these. I can see improvement, but it's agonizingly slow.
